Summers mean the advent of swimming in the pool or the ocean to combat the heat. Unfortunately, this increase in the number of swimmers can also lead to a lack of caution sometimes, which can in turn lead to drownings. Pebble Beach, also known as Flat Swamp, is a popular boating and swimming destination. The swim area is surrounded by a sandy beach and is separated from the boating access area with a yellow floating boom. On Sunday, a tragic incident took place in the Pebble Beach Access area when a man drowned.

The 26-year-old man had been trying to learn how to swim, and during such an attempt, started to go under the water. In order to save himself, he began swimming to a buoy that was located 40 feet away. He never resurfaced, and ultimately it was concluded that he drowned. In light of these terrible events, the Lexington YMCA has offered swimming tips to anyone venturing into the water.

As man drowns, officials stress caution while swimming

According to a report by Fox 8 channel, a news reporter visited the Pebble Beach Access area to check on the safety precautions available for the swimmers, and found them lacking. The report said that even though there were signs telling people to be careful, there were no lifeguards present in the area. Additionally, there were no life rings present in their designated boxes. There is a rack for life vests, but none of them are present in their place as well.

The YMCA Aquatics Director, Kendall Mintz, shared some safety tips that need to be followed by everyone venturing into the water. Mintz said, “When it comes to a lake, whether you are a pro swimmer or a beginner, always wearing a life jacket is so so important.” For Mintz, this rule applies to all bodies of water that are deep enough that one can’t see till the bottom. Her reasoning is simple, “During an emergency knowing that you have a life jacket on, if something were to happen, you would float on top of the water.”

According to some signs that are present at Pebble Beach, in some areas, it can get as deep as 15 feet. Mintz also believes that “Swimming with a lifeguard is always your best route.” Although, there are currently no lifeguards present at Pebble Beach. She also recommended people get formal swimming lessons that are given by YMCA, including CPR courses that could help save someone’s life. After the horrific incident that took place at Pebble Beach, her advice seems golden.

A tragedy that spurred action

When Jose Moises Ramirez-Olvera took a family trip to Pebble Beach, no one would have thought he would meet such a calamitous end. A swimming g lesson turned into a nightmare that, unfortunately, he could not escape. Around 3 p.m. on Sunday, a 911 call was made about Jose drowning at Pebble Beach Access in Denton. When the deputies reached the site of the accident, they encountered his family frantically searching for him.

It was too late. Despite the family “frantically” searching for him, he did not resurface after going underwater. Emergency Services, Rowan County Dive Team, and Davidson County Rescue Squad responded to the emergency call and headed to the scene of the incident. After almost two hours, around 5:00 p.m., they recovered the lifeless body of Jose. this tragedy has prompted the officials to advise people to be extra careful.
