Noah Lyles wants to erase Usain Bolt from the Olympics! While Lyles is fast emerging as the next big thing in track and field, there is no doubt that Usain Bolt is still the undisputed king. The Jamaican shocked the world when he blazed past the 100m mark in just 9.58s at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

What’s more, Bolt broke his own record of 9.69s on his road to glory. However, come the Paris Olympics, all these stats are about to change because Noah Lyles says so and thy will be done. 

Noah Lyles aims for new 100m world record

While it is no new news that Lyles has spoken of aiming for an Olympic quadruple, now his plans seem to be getting even grander. Speaking about his Paris aspirations, Lyles recently commented, “He(Usain Bolt) was the fastest man ever to do it…and soon, it’ll be me.” The statement was a direct challenge aimed at the world record of Usain Bolt. There is no doubt about the caliber of Lyles as an athlete, but claiming to better a record that has been left unscathed for 16 years is quite ambitious, even for Noah Lyles.

However, looking at his recent performances, things are surely looking bright for Lyles. In the build-up to Paris, the 26-year-old has clinched three back-to-back World Championships. Speaking about his training leading up to the Olympics, Lyles stressed on how he has put emphasis on his 60m run to improve on 100 & 200m. He said, “We worked on the 60 to help my 100 and my 200 and we’ve seen major progression in that.”

Running at the World Championships last year, Lyles came out as the fastest of the lot. He bettered his timing to run 100m within 9.83s. While it is still a long way from the world record, he can definitely dream of bettering it. As a matter of fact, Lyles is also chasing the 200m world record of Bolt as well. While Bolt holds the crown at 19.19s, Lyles is in hot pursuit at number three clocking 19.31s. 

Although he finished second best behind Coleman in the 60m discipline, the confidence oozing from Lyles is breathtaking. Echoing the sentiment, Lyles declared, “I’m kind of more the guy who likes to assert his dominance throughout the whole year.” Thus, with eyes set high on the Olympics glory, it will be interesting to see if Noah Lyles can snatch Usain Bolt’s crown or not.
