Sha’Carri Richardson has been on a winning spree in 2023. First in the Miramar Invitational, then in the Doha Diamond League, Richardson made a splash among her fandom. Along similar lines, the American sprinting icon edged her Jamaican rival Shericka Jackson at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest with a championship record of 10.65 seconds in 100m. Now, once again, the sprinter clinched another 100m glory, but this time on the tracks of Switzerland.

As she entered the 2023 Zurich Diamond League, all eyes were on her as she was about to face off against the fastest woman alive, Elaine Thompson-Herah. The Jamaican was hoping to put a stop to Richardson’s 100m winning streak, but the American track queen blew all competition out of the water.

Sha’Carri Richardson beats her Jamaican rival

As the women’s 100m started, Richardson spared no time to get ahead in the race. However, until the middle of the race, it still looked like anybody could win since most athletes were head to head.

But as the finishing line approached, Sha’Carri Richardson blazed through the arena and won the 100m in emphatic fashion. According to the Diamond League website, the American sprinting icon clinched the gold in 10.88 seconds.

Jamaica’s Natasha Morrison finished second with 11.00 seconds and Elaine Thompson-Herah also recorded a season-best time of 11.00 seconds.

This 100m triumph came just 10 days after Richardson became the newly crowned 100m world champion in Budapest. While Elaine Thompson-Herah was being considered to give Richardson a staunch competition, she clocked the timeframe of 11.00 seconds and took bronze.

As Richardson continued her 100m win streak, her most notable opponent was also missing from the lineup.

Shericka Jackson skips the 100m event in Zurich

Shericka Jackson had already been trounced by Sha’Carri Richardson, more than a week ago in the 100m world championship in Budapest.

This time around in Zurich, Jackson decided to skip the 100m and stick to her dominant event of 200m. Her choice was bound to pay off and the fastest woman alive in the 200m division cruised to victory with a time of 21.82 seconds.

Great Britain’s Daryll Neita finished second with 22.25 and American Kayla White finished third with 22.33 seconds.

This new guard of Jamaica has had on odyssey of icons to look up to and learn from, but come the Paris Olympics the country will be spoilt for choice when it comes to 100m sprinters. In 2021, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce lit the world on fire with their 10.56 and 10.60 times respectively.

Thompson-Herah being only the second person in history to pull off a 100m and 200m double at consecutive Olympics apart from Usain Bolt. Fraser-Pryce is the only female to medal in 100m in 4 consecutive Olympics and widely recognized as the greatest to ever do it. The next generation has their work cut out for them.

As for Richardson, she continues to dominate the 100m event. She will now be looking to secure her first-ever Olympic medal at next year’s Paris Olympics by replicating her impressive performances at the biggest sporting tournament.
