American track and field athletes have made a sensational start to the Olympic year. It started with Noah Lyles entering the record books at New Balance Grand Prix. But the biggest showdown awaiting the world was at the USATF Indoor Championships as Lyles and Christian Coleman faced off in 60 meters. While the former defeated the world record holder in 6.43 seconds, an even bigger surprise awaited the American audience.

The 23-year-old track and field athlete had equaled a 29-year-old record during the 2016 USA Junior Championships as a 15-year-old. Now, she equaled many more such records at the USATF indoor championships.

Multiple records to the name of American athlete at the USATF Indoor Championships

It was a sprinting extravaganza at the 2024 USATF Indoor Championships as Tia Jones raced to 5 records. She tied the 60m hurdle record in 7.67 seconds with Devynne Charlton, who set it at the 2024 Milrose Games. The previous record holder in the 60m hurdle was Susanna Kallur who had clocked 7.68 seconds in 2008. Jones has effectively picked her ticket to the World Athletic Championships and will fight for the world title in Glasgow.

“It was easier than I thought, just like the 7.72, which is why I know I can execute and go faster…“, Jones said in an interview. Her 7.67-second sprint is also the National record for the U.S.A. as well as the meet record for the USATF Indoor Championships in 60-meter hurdles. The other records were set at the Indoor Championship by Alexis Holmes and Chase Jackson, both of whom raced to national titles in their respective disciplines.

Alexis Holmes and Chase Jackson’s heroics

Chase Jackson defended her USATF Indoor national title with a record throw of 20.2 meters. Such was her domination that even her worst throw of the event was better than 2nd placed Maggie Ewen. “I feel really confident now going into Glasgow and starting an Olympic year like this is really amazing”, she later said in an interview. The winning throw gave Jackson a world lead as well as also set the facility record.

Alexis Holmes won the 400m national title in 50.34 seconds to set a meet record at the USATF Indoor Championships. She also set the world lead time of the year in the discipline while Tara Davis-Woodhall shone in the women’s long jump with 7.18 meters. It marked the personal best jump of the Olympic Champion while also setting a world lead. American female athletes are surely going to rock at the Paris Olympics 2024.
