When Tony Hawk retired from skating, the extreme sports fraternity lost a legend. Come February this year, another legend is calling it a day. Shaun White will appear in his fifth and last Winter Olympics after a glittering career. Apart from winning medals and championships, it is his charismatic personality that will be missed on the tour. Being a positive person throughout, White looks to go out with a bang.

Thus, with his forthcoming retirement, he posted a heartwarming picture of a young White on Instagram, burning some words on the post as well. As incredible as it sounds, it is incomprehensible to not see this legendary snowboarder on the tour from now on.

Fortune favors the bold has been his motto since the start of his wonderful journey. Making his debut back at X Games 2000, at 13, he is now 35 and a legend of the game. In two decades, he has achieved a greatness that only some can boast of. Winning three Olympic gold medals is not an easy feat; hence, he remains humble and committed to his craft. With emotions running high and dry, he took to Instagram to reflect on his glorious career by sharing a young picture of him standing with a snowboard.

“The thought of this being my last Olympics makes me stop and look back over the years. It’s been an incredible run. I’m 35 years old and I’ve spent 29 of them on a board… 23 of them as a professional!! As a kid, the Olympics didn’t even have snowboarding. I just loved doing it. Snowboarding gave me purpose and brought my family together. I’m so proud that I helped grow and shape the sport into what it is today. I can’t wait to see where the next generation takes it.”

Who stands in his way?

Although winning a gold medal would be a dream way to sign off, Japanese snowboarder Ayumu Hirano is a threat to White. He landed a frontside double cork 1440 indy, that took everyone’s minds away at the recently concluded World Cup event in Laax, Switzerland. A two-time silver medalist from the 2014 Sochi and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the odds are Hirano’s favor.

But, you never know with White. When the chips are down, he gets himself back up. After two poor performances in the first two qualifying competitions, he worked hard to rank third at the World Cup event and qualify for Beijing. Can he now bid goodbye to the sport, bagging yet another medal?
