59 Year Old Cyclist Suffers a Tragic End to His Life as Cops Get Involved in the Investigation

The bustling streets of Lincoln Square, a vibrant neighborhood in Chicago, witnessed a horrific tragedy. A cherished ceramicist and an avid cyclist met with an untimely fate losing his life in a bike-lane crash.

The resident of Edgewater, Heggemann was a celebrated ceramicist who shared a passion for cycling and was engaged in action in the designated bike lane. While he was heading north along the 5100 block of North Damen Avenue, at around 8 p.m. on October 24th he met with a deadly collision involving a Volvo S60.

Even though Heggeman was quickly transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, doctors failed to revive him and he passed away after suffering from trauma in his head and body.

The sudden news of Heggeman’s demise came as a blow for his near and dear ones to whom he was a “Don”. Heggemann’s colleagues remember him for his contribution to Northeastern Illinois University. Despite the demanding nature of ceramic work being associated with the full-time administrative assistant position, he managed time to follow his cycling passion.

However, things took an alarming turn when he collided with the car. Officers took swift action to apprehend the 30-year-old woman who was behind the wheel. 

Kim Ambriz, who is a Chair at the Art and Design Department in Northeastern enlightened others about Heggemann in his interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, “The most organized person — he was great. He was the first point of contact for everybody. He was just really positive, and you need that at the front desk when students are coming in and not knowing what’s going on.”

The Breathalyzer test conducted on the offender revealed an alcohol concentration result amounting to 0.20 which is twice more than the legal limit. As a result of this, the authorities took the incident as a possible DUI case.

The autopsy report revealed the multiple injuries resulting in the death of the cyclist shedding light on how Damen Avenue has transformed into a hotbed for bike accidents in recent times. Christina Whitehouse, the founder of bike safety group ‘Bike Lane Uprising’, stated, “Chicago is supposed to be one of the top biking cities, and we’re still losing people left and right.”
