This year marks the 24th season of the exceptional event that has secured a significant place among cycling enthusiasts. This article chronicles the journey of the event from its inception till it gained popularity.
A cross-state cycling endeavor magnified by a scenic odyssey
The only fully supported cross-state ride was born in 1999 in North Carolina from the joint and fruitful collaboration between Capitol Broadcasting Company, N.C. Division of Tourism (now known as Visit NC), the N.C Department of Transportation, along with N.C Amateur Sports.
The seven-day cycling journey commenced on October 1, and the fifth-leg of the event will be from Banner Elk and culminating at Emerald Isle. The route from Tarboro to Kinston is expected to draw more than 900 cyclists to the Kinston area. Emerald Isle, in collaboration with Carteret County Energy Services and Tourism Development Authority, has ensured that safety measures and precautions will be taken care of at the host site, organizing the annual event.
Jayne Calhoun, the Cedar Point Town Clerk shared information with the Carolina Coast Online, “This is expected to be a very large event with many cyclists participating. They are expected to be traveling along Cedar Point Boulevard (Highway 24) anywhere between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and drivers are advised to use caution when sharing the roadway with cyclists.”
Celebrating North Carolina’s scenic splendor through cycling
The 500-mile adventure was initiated with the mission of celebrating the scenic splendor of North Carolina, matched up by the promotion of visitor attractions, heritage tourism, and historic sites with the focus on raising awareness of the benefits of cycling on overall health. In their journey of 23 years, the event has crisscrossed states and touched 100 towns during overnight stops, leaving a mark on more than 800 communities.
The Parks and Recreation Director of Emerald Isle, Candace Dooley highlighted the extensive bike path of the town that extends the entire area of Emerald Isle, bestowing the cyclists with an opportunity to enjoy the coastal charm cycling their way back home.
Even amidst the picturesque setting, there has been significant awareness about the need to ride with caution along Cedar Point Boulevard (Highway 24), advising drivers to drive carefully while sharing the highway with cyclists.
The annual extravaganza is nearing its end for this season, and the preparations are going on full-fledged. The ‘Mountain to the Coast’ bicycle trek has secured acquiring uniqueness by fostering a sense of community by bringing together cycling enthusiasts to embark on rides along the charming coastal towns while making lifetime memories.
