In an attempt to cope with the distressing time, Ullrich resorted to al*ohol and co*aine and ended up paying a fine of the hefty amount and made an entry into the criminal record. In candid revelations, the cyclist opens up about his tumultuous experience, “I could drink more whiskey and snort more and more cocaine. Many people would have committed suicide, but my body resisted.”

It was the lure of the substances that led him to push the boundaries of endurance and ironically his body exhibited paramount resilience even in the darkest times. Ullrich confesses yet another staggering attempt at setting a world record by smoking over 700 cigarettes in a single day!

The bizarre endeavors speak volumes about the depths of the internal struggles that Ullrich had to endure. With this, it serves as a stark contrast to his athletic prowess that once propelled him to grab victory surpassing all competition in the Tour de France. The cyclist shared how he had been exposed to the brink of death, “In 2018 I was really depressed. As a cyclist I suffered, but after my career that suffering went in the wrong direction. In 2018 I was at my lowest point, with everything a person could endure physically and mentally. The next step would have been death.”

However, the revered athlete grappled with his personal demons and strived for redemption. Even though life has thrown multiple woes at Ullrich, it has gifted him with some remarkable gifts. One of his chief rivals, Lance Armstrong, later became one of his closest friends once they had bid farewell to the sport.
