In a city far from their home turf, some 2,600 supporters of Antwerp descended upon Barcelona, Spain. This is to support their team in the away game. However, as the hours passed and the moment of the match drew near, the mood took a darker turn.

The passionate fans assembled in the heart of Barcelona, at Plaza Real. From there, they made their way to the Olympic Stadium. This venue temporarily hosted Barcelona’s matches while Camp Nou underwent renovations. The Antwerp fanbase created a chaotic situation. They were the scenes of sheer violence. As per the reports, they even attacked the authorities.

Antwerp supporters began hurling objects, including cobblestones and bottles, towards the police. In response, law enforcement officers moved in to disperse the crowd, triggering a chaotic scene where chairs were sent airborne, and confrontations unfolded. According to Catalonia’s police agency, Mossos d’Esquadra, five individuals sustained minor injuries during the clashes.

However, one officer faced a more severe injury after being struck by a cobblestone. His arm was broken in the attack, necessitating an overnight hospital stay. Spanish media outlets report that Mossos d’Esquadra, in collaboration with Belgian authorities, has launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the assaults on the police.
