The unpredictability of the moment, combined with the reactions of those present with you, is one of the main reasons people attend these games. One such outstanding moment was on display during the US Open women’s doubles match: Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva vs. Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer.

The game was tense. Minnen-Wickmayer had won the first set but was behind during the second. The stakes were high as Minnen-Wickmayer was looking to close the gap by sealing the game despite it being Siegemund-Zvonareva’s turn to serve. The two teams went absolutely ballistic while rallying with each other. The tension kept building as Siegemund-Zvonareva looked to fight another day.

And just like the second round was in its second set when play was halted midway through a point. It turns out that the pitch had now been invaded by a little visitor. The teams looked at the empire in disbelief over the call before realizing the little visitor in their midst. A squirrel had seemingly lept onto the court behind Minnen and Wickmayer.

The creature scampered in confusion for a second before rushing off the court and allowing the action to resume. At first, the animal tried to hop over an advertising board to get off and exit. After a couple of tries, it successfully found its way out off the field, much to the delight of those in attendance.
How The Match Continued
The commentators found the incident thoroughly amusing, narrating, “This match has now had a little bit of everything in it.” As he continued to make his way out, they inquired. “He doesn’t want to go that way. I say, my good man, do you have a ticket?“, one commentator said clearly delighted by the incident.

Many of the spectators in attendance were amused as they began to document the little animal making his way off the field. Meanwhile, things on the field began to run their course as well. While the squirrel might have interrupted during the match, it did not distract Siegemund-Zvonareva one bit. The duo ran away with the match, winning 10 of their next eleven games. The match finally ended 6-7 6-2 6-0 to Siegemund-Zvonareva.
