Adam Driver inspires many emotions and can play a plethora of characters. The man has shone as bright as any star could in his leading roles in future Hollywood classics like ‘Marriage Story’ and franchises like ‘Star Wars.’ So one would think that the bigshot Hollywood actor would be used to dealing with the finer things in life. However, it turns out that we would be quite wrong in this assessment of Adam Driver, at least when it comes to cars.

Driver, who plays the role of Enzo Ferrari in the biographical film, recently recalled his experience driving an open-wheel single-seater Ferrari during the shoot. Let’s just say he had a bit of a hard time trying to maneuver the vehicle. When asked about his experience while driving, the actor simply replied: “Terrifying.”

Driver made his appearance at Ferrari’s North American premiere and was ready with answers to our burning questions. When asked about his experience with the vintage car, he said, “It teleports you back to the time and you realize if you turn left or right the wrong way, then you’re dead.” The actor compared the single-seater car to a “moving coffin,” saying  “There’s at least seatbelts in the newer cars.

The actor said that his single-seater was so dangerous that being thrown away from the car was deemed a safer option than being locked in it. Subsequently, the film’s director Michael Mann explained Driver’s no-seatbelts statement, saying, “The idea was you’d rather be thrown from the car than dragged by the car.” All actors in the film, including Driver, had to test drive Ferrari’s to make the racing scenes look authentic.

“I wanted everybody to have an experience of driving these cars on a racetrack,” said Mann, calling it “racecar 101.” He also revealed that at least 14 or 15 cars were used in the scene involving the 1957 Mille Miglia race. He also revealed that the cars recreated for the film “could go 140-150 miles an hour, and do so safely.”

Mann’s Relationship with Ferrari

Another interesting tidbit is the fact that Michael Mann has a personal connection with Enzo Ferrari’s son, Piero. The two have known each other for over 25 years. So when Mann was preparing to shoot, he had several conversations with Piero. Today, Piero is the vice chairman of the legendary car company. The two spoke about every single relevant detail, from Piero’s mother’s personality to the food they ate.

Piero had told Mann that his father was hardly ever informal or casual. The only place he made an exception was at their house in the countryside. Mann said Enzo had his idiosyncrasies. For example, he never made coffee nor did he ever shave himself. In fact, the barber shop at which Mann shot belongs to the son of Enzo Ferrari’s barber. Life really comes full circle, sometimes. Let us know what you’re looking forward to seeing most in the film.
