Will Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka’s Ranking Be Impacted After Wimbledon Championships 2021 Withdrawal?

World No. 3 Rafael Nadal shocked everybody after he announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon Championships 2021. Following Nadal’s announcement, WTA World No. 2 Naomi Osaka also announced her withdrawal from the Grand Slam. With these big names withdrawing from Wimbledon, there might now be a few changes to their rankings.
For Osaka, there aren’t many points at stake at Wimbledon 2021. The Japanese ace was ousted in the first round in 2019 since she had suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Yulia Putintseva.
So Osaka was essentially defending 10 points at Wimbledon 2021 and hence losing those points won’t affect her rankings. Osaka’s reason for withdrawal is her continued battle with mental health issues.

At the French Open 2021, she had caused a stir by not complying with the media duties set by the organizers. Osaka was then heavily fined and warned of further suspension. After this, she withdrew from the French Open 2021, citing mental health issues, and explained her long battle with mental health illness that she had been fighting since the US Open 2018.

Whereas Osaka doesn’t have to worry about her ranking, Nadal might be worried about his. At the start of the year, Nadal was closer to the World No. 1 spot; however, bad runs at Grand Slams have set him back.

Now, with his latest withdrawal from Wimbledon 2021, Nadal is set to lose 360 out of 720 points from the semifinal appearance in 2019. With this deduction, Nadal’s point total will come down from 8630 to 8270 points. That is higher than Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ 7980. Tsitsipas is defending only 10 points from Wimbledon 2021; hence, he will have to reach the quarterfinals to be the new World No. 3 after the Wimbledon.
