Little did the company known as Amazing Balloons know the frenzy they would start when they posted a reel of a recent job they did involving the Lynx and with a huge ‘Welcome Nneka’ sign. While many thought Minnesota was Nneka Ogwumike’s future destination, an ESPN report came to the rescue.

“To clarify this: I’m told Nneka Ogwumike is on a free agency visit in Minnesota. This is *not* an official decision/announcement,” posted Alexa Phillippou of ESPN W.

The trouble started when Minnesota’s Amazing Balloons company posted a video of their balloons at the Minnesota Lynx’s facility. The company arranged the balloons around a sign that read, “Welcome Nneka.” Well, that was enough to start a wildfire of speculations.

Many thought that it was a done deal, and now Ogwumike had confirmed she was signing with the Lynx. Since then, the video responsible for creating the alleged misunderstanding has been deleted, but it has gained traction over social media, passing from one social media account to another.

Well, you can understand why teams would want to have her, though. The president of the WNBA players’ association (WNBPA), Nneka, has done it all in her career. Her merit as a player needs no introduction – Nneka is a 2016 WNBA champion, the 2016 WNBA MVP, the 2012 WNBA Rookie of the Year, a 10-time WNBA All-Star, and a seven-time WNBA All-Second team honoree.

While Minnesota is certainly interested, the bigger question is how she would fare with the Lynx, a proposition that presents some interesting possibilities.

Ogwumike’s Projected Future With Minnesota

While it’s purely speculation, Nneka Ogwumike joining Minnesota would be a very interesting proposition.

Nneka is known for her dominant style of play that would only sharpen when she finds Napheesa Collier as her frontcourt partner. Ogwumike thrives in a half-court offense, and that’s the sort of system that Cheryl Reeve prefers.

Many believe that if Minnesota manages to get Ogwumike, they might try to get Lauren Betts, as the Lynx have the No. 2 pick option available. Betts, who had a fantastic season, ending her year with an NCAA title, might then be added to the Minnesota Lynx team to form the formidable three up front along with Collier and Ogwumike.

Minnesota is in dire need of veteran leadership, as several veterans like Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams are out of contract. This need is amplified by the departure of Bridget Carleton, who will represent the Portland Fire after the expansion draft.

So the next big thing to do is to get a player who has both the experience and the scoring punch to ignite the offense. She is a complete player who contributes on both ends of the floor and can be that glue that brings the young team together after the vacuum left by the departing seniors. Her average of 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and  2.3 assists just shows that she is on a different level altogether.

After their championship hopes were dashed as they fell against Phoenix in the semi-finals last year, they would look to rise again for a shot at redemption, and Ogwumike is expected to lead the Lynx pack to glory.
