The 2023 WTA Finals is a season-ending professional women’s championship tennis tournament. It is the 52nd edition of the singles competition and the 47th edition of the doubles competition, and it will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from October 29 to November 5. In both the singles and doubles events, eight players/teams compete in a round-robin format, divided into two groups of four.

After the four majors, it is the most important tennis event on the women’s calendar, as it features the top eight singles players and the top eight doubles teams based on their season results.

The WTA Finals is the season-ending conclusion for women’s tennis, with the top eight singles players and doubles teams competing for the title. With only two weeks until the WTA Finals in Cancun, the singles field of eight top stars is set, while seven doubles pairings have been confirmed, with one slot remaining.

Caroline Garcia had played some of the finest tennis of her career during the 2022 season, allowing her to qualify for the Finals and win the title for the first time. However, the 30-year-old did not qualify for this year’s competition and will be unable to defend her championship.

Where is the WTA Finals 2023 held?
There were many rumors that the event would take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. However, protests from several players impacted the decision and caused a change. Prague was then considered as a prospective location. But on September 7, the WTA announced that the 2023 WTA Finals will be held in Cancun, Mexico.

Aside from Cancun, four additional cities submitted bids to host the WTA Finals. However, the Cancun proposal was ultimately picked above other rivals such as Riyadh, Ostrava, Cluj Napoca, and Washington DC.

What is the total prize purse for the 2023 WTA Finals?
The WTA Finals 2023 total prize money is an astounding $9 million. In 2019, the WTA Finals prize purse reached a record-breaking height of a gargantuan $14 million. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event did not take place in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, the prize purse was $5 million, a reduction of 64.29%.
It has taken a big jump of almost 56% and shows signs of returning to the glorious levels it reached in 2019. Ashleigh Barty was able to capture the big sum in the 2019 tournament, and the players might see a similar amount next year.

The players in the finals are selected on the basis of their rankings. Each week, a player loses the points they earned for the corresponding week in the last season. Therefore, if they want to stay afloat in the ‘Race to The Finals’, players have to perform their best each week.

WTA Finals ranking points for singles and doubles competitions are 125 points for each round-robin match played, 125 points for each round-robin win, 330 points for a semi-final win, and 420 points for a final win.
The WTA finalized the eight players for singles and seven pairs for doubles. Now, all that is left to see is their drive to become the best in the showpiece event of the 2023 tour.
