Amid a Disappointing Season, Naomi Osaka Relates to Selena Gomez’s Harrowing Documentary on Health Struggles

On her Instagram story, Naomi Osaka posted about a documentary focusing on the mental health of a renowned celebrity. The documentary is based on the famous actress and pop singer Selena Gomez and her mental health issues. Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2014. Promptly, the former Disney star checked herself into a mental health facility.

Gomez had once disclosed to her fans that she had also received a bipolar disorder diagnosis. Gomez’s documentary recently made its debut on Apple TV. The4-time Grand Slam champion could relate her own struggle with mental health issues to the harrowing documentary.

Fans were once shocked and disappointed to see Osaka withdrawing from major tournaments. She cited her deteriorating mental health for her drastic decision.

Naomi Osaka shares Selena Gomez’s documentary for her fans

On her Instagram stories, Osaka was quick to share the recently released documentary. The movie includes Gomez’s attempt to gain control over her fragile mental health. This year hasn’t been good for Osaka, in terms of her on-court performances, as she had to withdraw from major tournaments while tasting defeat in the initial rounds of almost every tournament that she participated in.

Gomez’s six-year battle with anxiety, depression, and health issues is chronicled in the documentary titled, “My Mind and Me.” It provides a close-up look at the star’s life over the past six years. Gomez has recently made an effort to give back to the community, in part by tying her business ventures to charitable organizations. Additionally, Gomez unveiled Wondermind, a platform for mental health. She also runs the ‘Rare Impact Fund’ through her company, Rare Beauty, which raises money for mental health services.

Over the years, Osaka has also faced her fair share of difficult moments on the Tour. Officials fined the four-time Grand Slam champion $15,000 and threatened to kick her out of the competition after she refused to fulfill her required press conference duties at the 2021 French Open. The 23-year-old Osaka later withdrew from the Roland Garros to take care of her mental health.

Many athletes, including renowned basketball player, Steph Curry, expressed their admiration after Osaka’s daring move. Osaka’s decision to stand up to the authorities impressed him. He was astounded by the decision of the authorities to punish players instead of protecting their own.

Osaka continues to motivate people to give priority to their mental health

Osaka already serves as a spokesperson for brands like Nike, Beats by Dre, Tag Heuer, Hyperice, and Sweetgreen. In the latter two, she is an investor. The provider of resources for mental health, Modern Health, has recently added Naomi Osaka as their partner.

The Japanese star is also motivating people by creating a guided meditation experience with the help of Hyperice’s Core app and gadget. Through the device, Osaka gently narrates the meditation’s instructions while inviting participants to breathe in soft, high, and low tones. With such partnerships, Osaka is doing her best to help others struggling with their mental health.
