‘What’s Your Problem With Me?’: Alize Cornet Involved in a Heated Moment With Chair Umpire at Australian Open 2022

Alize Cornet is having an impressive run at the Australian Open 2022. She is into the third round after having caused a major upset earlier in the second round. She had defeated third seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain in straight sets in the second round, surprising the tennis world. However, during her third-round encounter, she was involved in a heated incident.

Why was Alize Cornet upset?

During her match against Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia, the Frenchwoman received a time violation and a loss of the first serve for checking the sun before serving. This incident took place when Cornet was a set down and the second set was locked at 4 apiece. Further, she argued with the chair umpire and said, “what is your problem with me?”

The Frenchwoman didn’t have an ideal start to her third-round encounter as she lost the first set 6-4 against the 29th seed from Slovenia. Cornet’s first serve percentage was decent at 62% but won only 52% of the points on the first serve in the opening set.

Further, the two players had a torrid time holding their serves in the first set. The Frenchwoman was broken thrice while she managed to break her opponent’s serve on two occasions. Alize Cornet managed to hit only four winners in the entire first set. On the other hand, Tamara hit 10 winners past Alize.

However, Alize Cornet managed to come back stronger in the second set. She clinched the second set, 6-4. The Frenchwoman overcame her mistakes made in the first set to level the encounter. Her first-serve win percentage improved massively, which stood at 68% in the second set. Moreover, she was looking good in the third and deciding set.

The 32-year-old has had an impressive run thus far in the opening Grand Slam of the season. She managed to win her opening two rounds in dominating fashion. Adding a cherry on top was the fact that she overcame the challenge of World Number 3 Garbine Muguruza in the second round.
