There’s a host of American tennis players who are headed to Paris for the 2023 French Open. While none of those players are among the favorites for the most prestigious clay court crown, they certainly have some pedigree under their respective belts. According to former World No. 1 Andy Roddick, there’s a good chance that an American will go the distance this year at the Stade Roland-Garros. After all, the likes of Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz will be in attendance.

In a recent discussion with The Tennis Channel, Roddick reflected on the chances of the American players at this year’s showpiece clay court event. During the discussion, Roddick pointed out the competitive advantages of several prominent American tennis aces. The former World No. 1 also believes that the American women have more of a chance at winning the coveted title than the men. Jim Courier, another former American tennis stalwart, also added his two cents to the discussion.

According to Andy Roddick, Taylor Fritz looks like the most likely American men’s candidate to deliver. Roddick said, “I think Fritz is our most reliable choice right now. Obviously, he played great in Monte Carlo, made the semis, had a couple of huge wins along the way there.”

Roddick also assessed the chances of other highly rated American men’s players such as Tommy Paul and Sebastian Korda. He also turned his attention to the American women’s contingent. He pointed to the likes of Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin, Sloane Stephens, and Madison Keys as the most likely contenders among the American women to go deep into the tournament.

Former American tennis great Jim Courier was also a part of the discussion featuring Andy Roddick. According to Courier, Coco Gauff stands a good chance of going one better this time around and win the title. “Obviously, she’s been having some difficulties in the singles court right now that hopefully she can solve in Paris”. Courier believes that Gauff’s excellent doubles form should encourage her to improve her singles performances. “The doubles court has been a safe harbor for her to keep confidence and hopefully, that will give her another good run in Paris”.

Gauff’s disappointing end to a promising 2022 French Open

Gauff came close in 2022 as she went all the way to the final before being overwhelmed by the eventual champion, Iga Swiatek. In the final, Gauff came nowhere close to matching Swiatek, as the Pole dominated the American throughout. Ultimately, Swiatek registered a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 victory to clinch the title.

Swiatek is certainly the favorite going into the tournament this year. However, Gauff would want to prove to the world that she’s learned from her mistakes in 2022.
