Martina Navratilova, the winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles, is one of the most active users of social media today amongst renowned sporting personalities, particularly Twitter. In addition to her role as a commentator, she regularly tweets about varied areas that interest her, like sports and politics.

Intriguingly, she doesn’t confine herself to discussing tennis; rather, she offers a wide range of other insights. Followers of the former Czech-American player will know that she has been a vehement critic of both Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Navratilova recently responded to a tweet on Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter worth $44 billion, which has certainly made her hesitant about continuing to use the platform.

Martina Navratilova’s hesitancy regarding the continuity of her Twitter usage

Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter has finally closed after months of legal wrangling, and will-they-or-won’t-they pandemonium. On Thursday night, Musk finalized the deal to take Twitter private and let go of several of the company’s highest-ranking executives.

After the news of Musk’s acquisition broke, tennis superstar Martina Navratilova took to Twitter and responded to a tweet related to Elon Musk. A Twitter user, Nathaly Jacoby, tweeted, “Elon Musk has officially bought Twitter. I’m staying on Twitter. Are you? Yes or No?”. In reply, the 66-year-old commented, “For now”.

Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Neuralink, SpaceX and Tesla, didn’t think about buying Twitter seriously until the first half of 2022. He initially made contact with the enterprise in an effort to join its board of directors due to his interest in joining this particular social media enterprise. But after reading the fine print, Elon decided he was better suited for other endeavors than serving on the board. As a result, this was the moment of inspiration that led to the concept of ownership.

Martina Navratilova once spoke out against losing Twitter followers

In April, many Twitter accounts saw a decline in their number of followers. However, the fact that so many of those accounts belonged to professional tennis players was a cause for concern. According to the data published by Tennis Tweets in April, Serena experienced the largest drop in followers, with a total of 3,694, while Navratilova lost 1,656 fans. Other notable names were Naomi Osaka, Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer, etc.

There was no evidence as to what initiated the fall. More importantly, most players stayed silent at that time. But on the other hand, Navratilova was not one of those players. Staying true to her reputation of expressing her unfiltered thoughts on Twitter, she came out with a cheeky response.
