And among those rarest of rares is the 29-year-old American tennis player, Jessica Pegula. She recently gave an interview where she spoke about the reason why she likes playing doubles. 

The former number 3 in women’s singles has won 4 singles titles and 7 doubles titles so far in her career. Jessica Pegula has featured in the QFs of all four Grand Slams. Currently, the American ranks 5 in singles whereas in doubles she is placed at number 3. Pegula has been a terrific doubles player partnering with the 19YO American rising star.

Jessica Pegula has achieved some remarkable feats in doubles partnering with Coco Gauff. The duo has won 5 doubles titles together including 3 WTA 1000s in Qatar, Miami, and Toronto. They became the first all-American pair to win the Miami Open doubles title in 22 years. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula reached the top spot in in doubles ranking last year. American tennis fans believe they are one of the best things that has ever happened in American doubles for the past few years. Do you agree?

Recently Jessica Pegula was asked about her secret to excel in both singles and doubles. There aren’t many who play at this level in both divisions, so how does it help to improve her game? Here’s what Pegula said in reply, “I love playing doubles. I think it’s helped me a lot in my game, working on a lot of intangibles, playing pressure points, a lot of serve return practice, working on your feel around the court, your lobs, strategizing, reading what the opponents are doing or the other team is doing. I really enjoy playing.”

Pegula then went on to add, “I’d much kind of rather do that than sit and think about my next singles match where I tend to overthink or players tend to overthink. So that can be kind of tough sometimes. I like to break it up with playing doubles. That’s just, I guess, enjoyable for me.”

Jessica Pegula entered the main draw of the US Open doubles event for the first time in 2011 through a wildcard. She has played with several layers in her doubles career but her partnership with Coco Gauff on the courts is like a match made in heaven. Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have revealed they’re now putting more focus on the singles, but that hasn’t stopped them from planning for the upcoming one-in-four-year event. They are already looking forward to teaming up with each other to bring a medal for their nation in the Paris Olympics. However, reports suggest that after the Olympics, they may rethink their involvement in the doubles events. But till then let’s enjoy the show.

How do they team up so well? Pegula believes this happens because they both get to play in the same events most of the time, and therefore it’s easier for them to pair up in doubles competitions.
