Alexis Ohanian was only a mere teenager when he started working in different fields, including fast-food chains like Pizza Hut. The American internet entrepreneur was getting pennies as a salary during those days of hardships as a teenager.

However, those jobs taught him tons of valuable lessons about responsibility, self-reliance, sales, customer service, and leadership. Recently, the Reddit co-founder was reminded of the same when a hiring poster of McDonald’s became a topic of child labor exploitation. Here’s how the tech entrepreneur reacted to the news of the renowned food chain hiring teenagers.

Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian opens up about child labor

Recently, one of the users on Twitter brought to light a job advertisement for McDonald’s hiring teenagers aged 14 or 15 and called it an example of cheap child labor. She said, “Chick-fil-A is not alone in exploiting children for cheap labor. In Iowa, yes, that’s a real sign at a McDonald’s advertising to hire 14&15-yos. IA’s proposed extreme child labor bills SF542 + HF647 was spearheaded by the National Restaurant Assoc who represents fast food cos.”

Alexis Ohanian, who has often used his online platform to emphasize niches like crypto and sports, expressed his opinion on the matter of labor exploitation. Having worked as a waiter himself during his teenage days, the tech entrepreneur knows the importance of such fast-food chain jobs in the development of his personality. Notably, the American online entrepreneur disagreed with that assessment, calling it a misconception of child labor.

He said, “FWIW, I got my first job inside of a CompUSA at 14 or 15. I needed to work for $ bc I wasn’t gonna get it from my folks. Got a ton of exp + confidence in sales/speaking. Next I washed dishes and then became a cook at Pizza Hut around 16, eventually promoted to waiter. Not new.”

While detailing his own journey, Ohanian revealed how he met some spoiled and brittle kids who had no prior experience in the field of food service or retail. He commented, “Imagine my surprise when I got to college and met spoiled kids who’d never worked a job (let alone in food service or retail) — I ran circles around ’em, they were brittle.”

The Reddit co-founder made his stance clear on McDonald’s hiring teenagers being perceived as an example of labor exploitation. Ohanian stated, “There are worthy examples of labor exploitation, but fast food jobs for kids old enough to drive ain’t it.”
