American tennis sensation Coco Gauff is crushing it at the Qatar Total Energies Open this year. After her first win against Kvitova, Coco sat down for a press conference. During the questions, one that struck out was the topic of her fellow American doubles partner Jessica Pegula. Pegula recently made a revelation that shocked the world. In the recent edition of the “Players Tribune”, Jessica Pegula recalled some truly horrific incidents from the near past.

When questioned about whether Gauff maintains a journal like Pegula, the 19-year-old American tennis sensation opened up about her co-star. She not only admitted to Pegula’s incredible determination and strength of spirit but also related how she saw Pegula up close in the days that followed the horror.

Coco Gauff respects Jessica Pegula’s “coolness”

Coco Gauff has always been one to support and push her favorite people forward, if anything. Recently, at the presser after her win against Petra Kvitova in the Qatar Total Energies Open, Gauff spoke about Jessica Pegula.

When asked if Gauff maintains a journal like her friend, she said, “I don’t know how long Jess has been doing it, but I read her Players’ Tribune essay, and it was great. It was emotional.”

Gauff further elaborated on her stance regarding the sensitive issue. “You know, I have never been the one to ask her up close”, she said, while referring to the unfortunate health episode of Kim Pegula. She confesses that she felt out of place and did not want to intrude on Pegula’s personal life as many people were already asking her about it.

Talking about the candor it takes to relive the situation all over again before presenting it to the world, Gauff admits that is a tough job.

Coco also has a fangirl moment for herself when she talked about Pegula. Of course, not many could muster the courage and sensibility to live through the horrific episode and then get it all out coherently. The 2022 Roland Garros finalist said, “Honestly, I look up to her in that way…I have been experiencing it up close, and just seeing the way she carries herself. You would have never guessed all the things she’s gone through.”

If anything, Gauff only admires her compatriot, “So that speaks to her personality and speaks to her level of coolness.” She aspires to be like Pegula as she said with a smile, “Hopefully, I can have that.” 

Pegula’s experience was shocking, to say the least

Pegula’s recent revelation about her family crisis last year has stunned the world, to say the least. Although there were speculations about her mother, Kim’s health, nobody could fathom the seriousness of the situation until Pegula spoke up via an article penned by her on the Player’s Tribune.

Coco Gauff herself has earned admiration from her fans for being so well-poised and mature at such a young age. However, the way she looks up to her doubles partner is nothing less than absolutely adorable. It will certainly remind fans of the strong bond shared between two legends in women’s tennis: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova!
