‘Never Thought That I Was Different’ – Coco Gauff Reveals the Biggest Thing Learnt From Serena Williams

Throughout her tennis career, Gauff has idolized the American legend, Serena Williams. Recently, she revealed the biggest thing learned from her. At just 18, Coco Gauff has risen leaps and bounds to be amongst the elite group on the WTA Tour.

She has had a fantastic 2022 season where she reached the finals of the French Open in not only singles but also doubles. Further, she scaled new peaks as she made it to the top spot in the WTA doubles rankings.

Coco Gauff talks about the most important lesson learned from Serena Williams

During an interview, Gauff talked about the learnings from her idol, Serena Williams. She said, “I think really just the way she was able to transcribe [sic] in a sport that’s predominantly white. I think that’s something that as a little girl and even now meant a lot to me. Especially, like, growing up, before I was born, there wasn’t many.”

Further, she added, “Before Serena came along, there was not really an icon of the sport that looked like me. So growing up I never thought that I was different because the No. 1 player in the world was somebody who looked like me. I think that’s the biggest thing that I can take from what I’ve learned from Serena.”

Gauff had an injury scare in the recently concluded Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. She limped off during her first-round exit at the tournament. However, she has shrugged off her injury concerns to play in her favorite Grand Slam tournament next week.

Who will Gauff face at the US Open?

The World Number 12  has been handed a fairly straight-forward draw in the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. She will take on Leolia Jeanjean of France in the opening round of the tournament. Further, if she manages to move past the first round, she will face the winner of the match between Daria Saville and Elena Gabriela Ruse in the second round.
