Serena Williams’ appreciation letter for her mother Price
After giving birth, the athlete sent an emotional tribute to her mother, Oracene Price, on Reddit and thanked her for all the hardship she has gone through while raising them.
She compliments her mother for being the toughest person she knows and expresses fondness for her newborn daughter’s strong physique, one that is similar to Williams’ dominance on the court. The 23-time Grand Slam champion then addresses all the horrendous rumors she has had to deal with throughout the years.
“But mom, I’m not sure how you did not go off on every single reporter, person, announcer, and quite frankly, hater, who was too ignorant to understand the power of a black woman.“
The star told Price that she is “proud” that, together, they “were able to show them what some women look like.”
Williams continued by citing other injustices and body shaming that she has experienced over much of her life. “We don’t all look the same,” she said. “We are curvy, strong, muscular, tall, small, just to name a few, and all the same: we are women and proud!”
