‘Proud of You’ – Serena Williams’ Former Coach Praises Cori Gauff for Career-Best Performance at French Open 2022

American tennis star Cori Gauff is one of the most exciting young players on the circuit currently. Only 18, she has played some brilliant tennis to reach the semifinals of the ongoing French Open 2022. The former Junior French Open singles winner has looked strong in her conquest for her first Grand Slam title this year. Currently ranked at number 15 in the world rankings, she will soon take on Martina Trevisan of Italy for a place in the finals.

Courtesy of her brilliant performance at such a young age, the teenager has drawn a lot of attention. From experts to even the former coach of Serena Williams, Patrick Mouratoglou, Cori has earned herself some admirers.

Patrick Mouratoglou is proud of Cori Gauff

Patrick Mouratoglou is one of the most respected tennis coaches in the sport. As a very active social media user, Patrick often reacts to the everyday happenings of the tennis world. Notably, the Frenchman is currently working as a full-time coach to Simona Halep. Being a commentator as well, he follows the game very closely and has witnessed the rise of Cori Gauf in recent times; Not to mention she used to be his pupil back at the start of her career.

Evidently happy for her, Mouratoglou took to his Instagram account to congratulate his student, following her quarterfinal victory over compatriot Sloane Stephens.

The relationship between Mouratoglou and Gauff dates back to her junior tennis days when she earned a sponsorship to train at the Frenchman’s academy and rose to prowess by reaching the final of the Junior 2017 US Open.

Gauff to meet Martina Trevisan in the semifinals

The next opponent on her road to the French Open title is the current World No. 59, Martina Trevisan. She will play her first Grand Slam semifinal. Although the 28-year-old is a late bloomer, she is in a brilliant form lately. The Italian won her first trophy in Rabat and continued her fine form in the French Open.

Looking at their head-to-head records, the two have met only once in their careers. Interestingly, even that was at the Roland Garros, in 2020. Notably, Trevisan came out victorious in the three-set match on that occasion.

However, it won’t be easy for the Italian this time around as the youngster’s game has only gotten better since then. Also, the American will be fully aware of the risk that her experienced opponent possesses. We look forward to a good game of tennis between these two.
