“I Was So Proud” – Mike Tyson Returns an Old Favor to WWE as He Snubs AEW in Latest Statement

We mostly know Mike Tyson for his phenomenal boxing career. But he left his mark in pro wrestling as well famously appearing at WrestleMania 14 as well. He made a few WWE appearances afterward and was even inducted into their Hall of Fame. Recently, the boxing legend talked about his wish to work with WWE once again.

Celebrity appearances in professional wrestling are something very common. We can find many instances of impactful celebrity involvement through the decades. In fact, sometimes they do a remarkable job and perform in the wrestling ring like a regular competitor.

Looking back to history, at WrestleMania 14, Vince McMahon decided to incorporate Tyson into the main event feud between Shawn Michaels and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. He acted as the special ringside enforcer for their WWE Championship match and made the count for the pinfall which saw Austin triumph and usher in a new era for pro wrestling.

Mike Tyson’s preference for WWE over AEW

Recently during the “Hot Boxin’ with Mike Tyson” podcast, NFL star Sebastian Joseph-Day asked him about playing a guest role again in WWE and the former boxer gave his honest thought. While choosing WWE over AEW anytime, he added, ‘You know Tony Khan and those guys? Yeah, these guys want to put me on the show and stuff before. But I don’t care if they got more money. If Vince [McMahon] put me on the show, I’d rather go there [WWE] even though they [AEW] pay more money.’

The Undertaker, who was also another guest of the episode, replied to this thought by saying, “I don’t blame you there. It’s going to get much more play. WWE is going to do it right. Yeah.” 

Mike Tyson recalls Vince McMahon’s favor during his tough time

McMahon utilized the perfect opportunity of offering a suspended Tyson, the post of the special guest referee at the WWE Championship match during WrestleMania 14. After the acceptance of the offer, the company decided to have him in the game involving ‘Stone Cold Austin and Shawn Michaels, two of the top superstars of that era. Though Tyson sided with Michaels and DX at the start, he eventually ended up counting the pin for Austin and celebrated his win as well.


However, it’s not only Vince McMahon and WWE who got benefitted from that, it helped Iron Mike as well. Expressing his gratitude to Vince McMahon for offering him that special opportunity back in 1998, Mike noted, ‘They gave me so much money. I was in debt, too. I got a couple million dollars. I was so proud. Vince (McMahon) became my main man,’.

Mike Tyson has been last seen commenting on Katsuyori Shibata vs. AEW All-Atlantic Champion Orange Cassidy during the November 4, 2022 edition of Rampage.
