Braun Strowman was WWE’s second choice to take the WWE Universal Title off Bill Goldberg. The Monster Among Men beat Goldberg at WrestleMania 36, after Roman Reigns was taken off the card due to health concerns.

In an interview with Lilian Garcia for her Chasing Glory Podcast, Braun Strowman spoke about many things, including his run-ins with the Undertaker and his support to NXT superstars. The most noticeable segment of the interview was regarding his stint as Universal Champion.

Strowman beat Goldberg in less than two-and-a-half minutes. The champion came out of the blocks with multiple spears, but was no match for Strowman’s powerslams.

“In my opinion, I think I did a damn good job. I think we made the most of it. I think we did an awesome job, everyone I had to work with, and behind the scenes and story-telling. The whole aspect of it in the middle of a pandemic, I thought we hit a home run,” said Strowman.

The Monster’s win was an underwhelming one

The circumstances surrounding Strowman’s win at WrestleMania were very disappointing. Roman Reigns was being pushed as the man to beat Goldberg. The latter was booked extremely strongly, following a dominating win over the Fiend Bray Wyatt.

Roman was immunocompromised, given his history with leukemia. Orlando was a hotspot for the novel coronavirus. Strowman was given the spot, and hence, went on to win. Strowman had only just lost his Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn, making his win feel very anti-climactic.

“You never know what’s going to happen in WWE. That’s one of my favorite things about the job that keeps you on your toes. Opportunity blew the door off the hinges for me at that moment,” said Strowman.

He is now looking for more opportunities on Raw

Strowman’s run as champion was quite contrasting to his own opinions. His matches against Bray Wyatt, The Miz and John Morrison failed to make him look like a legitimate top guy on SmackDown. AJ Styles ended up overshadowing Strowman as the new face of SmackDown.

Strowman was pinned by The Fiend, and his miserable run as champion came to an end. The Fiend lost the title a week later to Roman Reigns, in a triple threat match. To protect the Fiend, Strowman was the one pinned.

Strowman is now on Raw and will represent his new brand at Survivor Series. He will battle against Team SmackDown alongside fellow SmackDown draftees AJ Styles, Matt Riddle, Sheamus, and his newest challenge, Keith Lee.
