Hulkamania went wild quickly in 1983 when Hulk Hogan returned to WWE and turned babyface. But the fans went over with it when The Hulkster defeated the first ever Iranian WWF/E Champion The Iron Sheik in 1984. However, did you know that one of the wrestling legends at the time had plans to end Hulkamania the minute it started? Hogan once opened up about secret information not many knew.

A couple of years back in 2019, Hulk Hogan appeared on the Steve Austin Show, hosted by Stone Cold Steve Austin. He recalled his first WWE Title win in 1984 at Madison Square Garden. Shockingly, he told The Rattle Snake about wrestling legend Verne Gagne offering 6-figure money to Sheik to break Hogan’s leg!

The nWo member said, “So, the finish was on where I was still going to go over. There was a moment there where in the Garden — and I was cool. I was going to do the job, but I was gone. And Junior came back and said, ‘Things are on plan,’ and this, that and the other.”

Hogan added, “I went out — and Iron Sheik did the job for me. Little did I know, Verne [Gagne] had contacted the Sheik and said, ‘I’ll give you $100,000 if you break Hogan’s leg,’ you know? (Austin says, ‘Shoot.’) Shoot, yeah.”

“And so after that, Khos [Iron Sheik] goes, ‘I can’t believe it, but I did the best thing. Verne wanted me to break your leg!’ Because Khos broke in with Verne. They were tight. I got through it all on a whim and a wish,” he further said.

The Hulkster wrestled at Gagne’s AWA for a brief period before returning to WWE. Legend says the AWA owner was not a huge fan of Hogan and didn’t think he was world championship material.

There was a beef between the two, and Sheik once admitted about Gagne bribing him to do so. This was because Gagne wanted a cut in Hogan’s revenues from both merchandise sales and his matches in Japan, which Hogan refused and then went to WWE.

How many world titles did Hulk Hogan win in his career?

The fans saw The Immortal One’s face as a world champion for three decades. He won the WWE title in the 80s and early 90s. Furthermore, he won the WCW title in the late 90s and then again the WWE title in the early 2000s. Therefore, he is a favorite of several fans until today.
