“I Didn’t Want the Burden”: WWE Star, Endorsed By Dwayne Johnson, Joined the U.S. Marines Because of Family Complications

Several WWE superstars or some of the wrestlers in the business have served in the US Armed Forces prior to becoming a wrestler. There are multiple retired and current wrestlers whose military background is often brought into their wrestling storylines.
Similarly, the current top WWE tag team star once shared his experience and the reason he joined the marines when he was young. Sometime back, even Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson praised this star.

In 2019, former WWE RAW tag team champion Montez Ford or Kenneth Crawford sat for an interview with Yahoo Sports. He shared joining the Marine Corps so his mother and family members won’t worry about his future.
Ford said, “I graduated high school after doing four years of the ROTC program, during which time I actually made it to battalion XO (executive officer). I chose the Marines because at that point in time, my mother and my family were going through a few complications and I didn’t want the burden of having to worry about me on them. I took on the pleasure of going and serving my country for four years and I think it was the best decision I’ve made to date.”

The former SmackDown tag team champion served in the Marines for four years from 2008 to 2012. Upon exiting the Marines, he had a question about where to make a career next. However, at the time, he wanted to spend more time with his loved ones and children, the reason he left the Marines.

Crawford at the age of 18 was offered a handful of college scholarships. He was a high school track and field standout. However, he choose a different path and joined the Marines for the next four years.
Did Montez Ford plan to join the WWE post exiting the Marines?

Ford never planned to join WWE or even become a wrestler in the future after leaving the Marines. Nevertheless, he went to give a tryout at the WWE Performance Center. He recalled being a fan of the sport saying, “I always watched it my entire life”.

The 32-years old WWE superstar recalled wrestling with his sister imitating several wrestlers in his childhood. He wasn’t really into wrestling but attended a WWE tryout. They did not select Crawford in the first tryout, but WWE didn’t slam the door on him and eventually got selected.

Since then Montez Ford is in WWE partnering with Angelo Dawkins and forming The Street Profits. The team has won the Tag Team Titles of all three brands once making them Tag Team Triple Crown Champions in WWE. Also, he is one of The Rock‘s favorite stars.
