“I Wanted to Save It”: ‘American Badass’ The Undertaker Confessed the Biggest Regret of His WWE Career in Heartfelt Out of Character Talk with Stone Cold Steve Austin

The Undertaker had a storied 30-year career in WWE. During this time he did it all, from holding championships, to wrestling some of the biggest names as well as main eventing WrestleMania. Talking about WrestleMania, it became synonymous with ‘The Deadman’. His legendary winning streak became a part of wrestling folklore.

As such, it was a huge shock when the streak ended out of nowhere at WrestleMania 30. The Undertaker once talked about his feelings toward the decision to end the streak and whether Brock Lesnar was the right person to do it.

The Undertaker winning at WrestleMania had become a guarantee by the time WrestleMania 30 rolled around. In the uncertain world of pro wrestling, Taker extending his WrestleMania streak was the one thing certain to happen every year.

Year after year, Taker added some of the biggest to his WrestleMania victims list. But it all came to an unexpected halt in New Orleans. Brock Lesnar unceremoniously pinned Taker at WrestleMania 30 to leave people literally with jaws hanging.

The Undertaker shared his thoughts on Brock Lesnar ending the streak

At 21-0, many fans thought that it was inevitable that The Undertaker will retire with the streak intact. But since The Phenom was old school, he was always going to go out on his back. He would put someone over and give them a chance to break the streak. And so it turned out to be the case as Brock Lesnar became the ‘1’ in 21-1.

During an interview with another legend, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, on the Broken Skulls Session, The Phenom revealed his thoughts on The Beast ending the streak.

He said he didn’t think Lesnar needed to be the one to end the streak. Taker revealed, “I wanted to save it to for somebody who needed it. If we were going to break it, I wanted to make sure that it was for the right person. I personally didn’t think Brock needed it. Brock was you know, Brock made. And beating me, I don’t think was going to elevate Brock that much more. So that was my only kind of question.”

The former WWE Champion also added that he found out on the day of WrestleMania 30 that the streak was going to end. He stated, “When I got to the building that day, at that point, was still going over. So the finish changed during the course of the day.”

The American Badass wanted to put over a younger talent when it came to losing at WrestleMania. It could have done wonders for someone who was new. However, Vince McMahon, the former CEO of WWE, who made the infamous decision to end the streak, said it was time for The Undertaker to pass the torch so that someone else could benefit from it. Whether it had to be Lesnar is up for debate.
