WWE fans are in for a treat over the next couple of weeks. In a surprise turn of events, 16-time World Champion John Cena confirmed his return to the ring as he crashed the December 16 episode of Friday Night SmackDown. The Massachusetts-born wrestler will join forces with Kevin Owens to take on Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns.

The contest, on December 30, will be his first WWE match since losing to ‘The Tribal Chief’ at SummerSlam 2021.

This announcement came as a shock to everyone watching. Fans certainly cannot ask for a better alliance to battle The Bloodline. But the question is, how did this happen? 

John Cena hijacked a segment to reveal his return

The latest episode of Friday Night SmackDown was a memorable one, as it gave birth to a tag team match that fans didn’t know they needed. During the episode, Reigns entered and put forward his demand to book a tag team match for the final SmackDown of 2022. 

The WWE Universal Champion announced he would pair up with a member of Bloodline, Sami Zayn, to take on Kevin Owens and a partner of his choosing in a tag team match.

Before Reigns could talk further, Cena made his second WWE appearance for 2022. He appeared on a video call on the TitanTron and interrupted ‘The Tribal Chief’. The charismatic 16-time World Champion’s appearance drew an excited reaction from the WWE Universe. The 20-year WWE veteran stated that Owens texted him, asking him to be his tag team partner, and he had agreed to do so. 

Cena celebrated 20 years in WWE in 2022

John Cena made his first WWE appearance in 2022 on June 27 and celebrated his 20-year WWE anniversary. Although the fans were delighted to see him, the future WWE Hall of Famer did not have a match. However, that is set to change, ensuring that he extends his streak of having had at least one match a year.

Cena will return to the ring for the first time in 16 months; He last competed on August 21, 2021. Considering that it is against the most dominant faction in WWE today, Cena’s comeback is not going to be a cakewalk.
