Nike Attempted to Sue $5.46 Billion WWE Over Dwayne Johnson’s Iconic Catchphrase in 2016

Dwayne Johnson is the world’s highest-paid actor, and he has reached that feat using his own hard work and dedication. What started as a disappointing football career is now one of the most successful acting careers in the world. Johnson also had an extremely decorated WWE career.

During his WWE career, he was involved in various feuds with some of the most iconic WWE wrestlers to ever exist. During this span of time, he was also the recipient of multiple championships. The Rock was immensely popular among the fans because of his exceptionally good mic skills, and promo-delivering abilities.

The Brahma Bull of WWE was known for some of the most iconic catch-phrases of all time. The Rock would always have one or the other iconic catchphrase of his in every one of his promos. And, among them, one such catchphrase was, ”Just Bring it”.

However, in 2016, something unimaginable occurred. Sports apparel giant Nike sued WWE for the usage of the phrase, ‘Just Bring it’. The phrase was made famous by Dwayne Johnson and used by him on multiple occasions. However, WWE used the phrase for the title of their 2001 video game, ‘SmackDown: Just Bring It’.

Nike sued WWE for the usage of the catchphrase. The lawsuit was filed based on their belief that it sound similar to their catchphrase, ‘Just Do It’. In 2014, WWE filed for federal trademark protection, and wanted to use the phrase on a variety of their clothing.

In 2015, WWE’s application was published, and Nike filed the lawsuit. Nike believed WWE’s catchphrase would lead to confusion in the market and cause irreparable damage. Nike had been using their phrase, ‘Just Do It’ since as early as 1989, and did want confusion in the market.

In 2015-2016, sporting goods giant Under Armour announced a global partnership with Hollywood actor, Dwayne Johnson. The partnership saw Johnson play an integral role in the creation of a varied range of products, such as shoes, apparel, and other accessories.

The first products with Dwayne Johnson’s identification on it were a duffle bag and a backpack. The products were launched on Under Armour’s website. It is 2022 now, and the partnership has been going extremely strong. Various new projects have now stood up, and the tie-up between these two giants has proven to be extremely successful.
