WWE ended its first show of the year with a lot of confusion as Goldberg came out to challenge Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship. ‘The Iconic’ returned much to the shock of the fans, but there was no solid backing for his attack on the Champion.

Goldberg explained how he wanted to challenge Drew McIntyre because the latter had ‘no respect’ towards WWE Legends. However, the context here was completely off and it all felt pushed.

The reason it felt that way was because it was exactly that way. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez noted that Raw was running out of time towards the end and WWE was in serious trouble to end the show and compress their content within that time.

Drew McIntyre had an entire crucial promo cut out

Apparently, Drew McIntyre was supposed to cut a heated promo against the seated legends following his victory over Keith Lee. This would build hip to the sudden and dramatic return of Goldberg.

This would have built McIntyre’s character as disrespectful and would provide a sufficient backstory for Goldberg’s return. However, none of this happened and it was all scrapped in order to wrap up the show.

It was later also found that after Goldberg pushed Drew McIntyre, the latter stood back up to confront ‘The Iconic’. Although, this was also cut and the show ended on USA Network with McIntyre on the floor.

Goldberg’s argument was baseless and fans did not get behind his return. WWE faltered here and probably should have cut the New Day and Miz TV promo (which was much less relevant) shorter in the beginning to accommodate a much larger scaled storyline.

WWE fans are still confused over Goldberg’s lack of reasoning, and it was a sure hit and miss by WWE in their attempt to kick-start the feud, let alone revive the character of Goldberg in the eyes of fans.
