Stephanie McMahon is someone who is hated on-screen for her heel character. But off-screen, Stephanie is someone who takes care of the most important things.
She said, “When she[Charlotte Flair] and Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks and Bayley were all performing in NXT, it gave rise to Women’s wrestling in our business. And our audience started chanting this is wrestling and women’s wrestling.”
Stephanie then reveals the fuel behind breaking the norms they had in the women’s division.
She added, “At that time NXT was more developmental before it evolved into our third brand.
“We had a match that was all of 30 seconds. Women’s tag team match for women’s for entrances that lasted all of 30 seconds. And unfortunately, that was the norm. And our fans had had enough. So they started this hashtag give diva’s a chance that trended worldwide for over three days. Specifically calling for better character development, more athleticism, longer matches, better storylines and we wanted to respond in the biggest way possible.”
Watching the dismal condition of the division, it was the WWE Universe that voted and raised their voices for a change.
A change that would revamp the whole Divas division.
And thus, the seeds for The “Women’s Revolution” were sown. A change that has now transformed the present and future of WWE for Good.
The WWE Chairman changes his mind
Stephanie then mentions how her father also had a change in mind. Vince McMahon might be one of the most difficult persons to convince.
However, he had to listen to what the fans wanted. The WWE universe wanted to see the change for the women wrestlers. They wanted better scripts and stories for them.
“My father, the Chairman and CEO, Vince McMahon responded ‘We hear you, keep watching #givedivasachance,” Stephanie McMahon said.
No one could have predicted the outcome. WWE shocked their fans and changed the fate of their female wrestlers.
The change
The company unveiled the rebranding of the Divas division to the Women’s division at WrestleMania.
They called in WWE Hall of Famer Lita to announce the rebranding and to reveal the new Championship belt.
WWE also announced that female wrestlers will now be known as Superstars just like men. Up till that point, they were known as Divas.
