Even though Adam Cole moved to AEW, WWE had plans for him. Unfortunately, those were plans which probably never would have appealed to Cole.
According to reports, WWE wanted to move Cole to the main roster. However, the idea was to change his name, make him Keith Lee’s manager, and then work their way from that point.
In fact, the primary idea was to make him the smaller guy behind the bigger guy. Of course, this wouldn’t sit well with him.

Moreover, another deal breaker between Cole and WWE could be that Cole did not want to give up his Twitch platform account.
According to WWE policy, no main roster superstar can have a third party account without sharing profits. As a result, most Superstars gave up their Twitch account. Cole could still be on Twitch because WWE NXT Superstars did not have to abide by this policy.
