At Survivor Series 1997, Bret Hart faced Shawn Michaels in the main event for the WWE Title. Shawn was the cocky challenger and Bret was the brave champion.

They fought to a thrilling finish where Shawn locked Bret in his own move, the Sharpshooter. As soon as Michaels sat back into the hold, referee Earl Hebner called for the bell, even though Bret did not tap out.

The title was handed to Shawn, and the incident was labeled the Montreal Screwjob (due to the PPV being held in Montreal). Bret Hart moved to WCW and Vince McMahon and the WWE moved on to make new Superstars.

“I think me and Vince have reached an understanding where we don’t bring up a lot of old, dodgy stuff, and we kind of buried the hatchet,” said Bret. “I think in the end, I’m still proud of the way I handled myself through the whole Screwjob period. But in all honesty, I think they’re not proud of their conduct.”

Vince’s relationship with Bret Hart faced another tragic turn with the death of Owen Hart. Owen was Bret’s brother who stayed back in WWE when he moved to WCW.

At Over the Edge 1999, Owen Hart fell to his death from the rafters of the arena. He fell after his entrance gear malfunctioned as he was set to make a superhero like entrance from the rafters into the ring.

“I didn’t like a lot of what happened with my brother Owen’s horrible accident. But I do believe in retrospect, when we look back, that Vince had probably very little to do with what happened to Owen,” said Hart.

All in all, Bret Hart and Vince McMahon’s relationship improved quite a bit after the tragedy of Chris Benoit. Hart defended the wrestling business, which reinforced their new relationship, setting aside past differences.
