While CM Punk may be ‘The Best in the World’ in wrestling, the same cannot be said about his other endeavors. After leaving the WWE in 2014, he joined the world of MMA. Making his debut at UFC 203 on September 10, 2016, he was the fans’ favorite. Despite facing off against an unproven Mickey Gall, he lost the match due to a submission choke. Both critics and fans heavily criticized his UFC run, which included another bout at UFC 225. Finally, in 2021, Punk hung up his gloves and returned to pro wrestling.

Despite leaving his UFC career behind, to this day, many detractors criticize him. Comparing him to the likes of Brock Lesnar, who also transitioned to the UFC but had a much better career.

The first person to call out Punk and criticize his wrestling was Joe Rogan. To this date, he often brings up Punk’s UFC career on his podcast. Initially, Rogan said, “He doesn’t have any talent, it’s all it is. He doesn’t have physical talent for whatever reason.” He also claimed that since the WWE was scripted, Punk could be the ‘Best in the World’. The same does not apply when it comes to the UFC.

Rogan even brought up Punk while talking to The Undertaker. Taker and Rogan both said that Punk got a massive payday from the UFC only to realize he could not cut it. Taker has been a fan of MMA for a long time and has attended UFC matches. The most recent person to call out Punk was Ernest ‘The Cat’ Miller, who worked for WCW, WWE, and Impact Wrestling.

While on Fightful Overbooked, Miller was asked about his thoughts on CM Punk’s UFC career and his return to the WWE. Miller said, “When I looked at that CM Punk fight, his real fight I got 12-year-old kids who could’ve knocked CM Punk out.” The Chicago native claimed that he trained for a year ahead of his debut fight. Miller has had some background experience in MMA.

Miller would go on to say, “I think he probably the worst fighter of anytime in that.” He went on to say something along the lines of what Rogan had said, that Punk was and is good at wrestling, but not at MMA. Nevertheless, despite not cutting it in another sport, the former AEW star has carved out an immaculate wrestling career. In fact, the WWE star aims to enhance his legacy further by engaging in a blockbuster feud with Seth Rollins shortly. Nevertheless, what do you make of the criticism CM Punk has garnered for his ventures outside the WWE? Let us know in the comments section below.

One take at a time

My passion for professional wrestling began when I saw Kane ripping the Hell in a Cell door off in the iconic 1997 match. I used to enjoy watching WWE re-runs at 5 in the evening when I got home from school. It was sort of a ritual for me.
