Universal Champion Roman Reigns may be the top heel of the WWE, but he was the most hated wrestler on the roster once upon a time. WWE tried to build the Tribal Chief as the next ‘John Cena‘ of the company. Keeping that in mind, WWE pitted the two stars against each other in 2017.

Ahead of their clash at No Mercy 2017, the duo had a contract signing under then RAW manager Kurt Angle’s supervision. Out came John Cena and started going after the Big Dog. He said that Vince McMahon had protected Roman, but as the poster boy of WWE, Reigns won’t be protected from Cena anymore.

After coming out to the ring, Reigns ripped on the people booing Cena. He said Cena wasn’t as good as he never retired the Undertaker; Reigns did. Cena proceeded to lay into Reigns as he called The Big Dog a corporate-created copy of himself.

He justified his infamous crowd reaction as two contrasting waves of the WWE Universe. One wave agreeing with Cena’s values and the other wanting Cena to “turn heel.”

“They go back and forth with you because when they look at you, they see what I see – a cheap-a** corporately created John Cena bootleg,” Cena buried Roman.

Then the funniest part of the promo happened when Roman seemingly forgot some lines. Cena hilariously broke the fourth wall and said, “Go ahead, find it, I’ll wait. “It’s called a promo, kid. If you’re going to be the big dog, you need to learn to do them.”

Roman Reigns then said that Cena buries as much talent as possible to stay on top of the mountain. However, Cena could not bury him, no matter how much he tried. He worked day and night so that Cena could be a part-timer.

Cena asked him where his shovel was to bury people. “Dude, I can’t tell if you’re blind or stupid,” he said. “Look and listen (pointing to the crowd) “They hold the keys, they always have, they always will.”

Cena pointed out that he hasn’t been in the WrestleMania main event for five years, and he was just the opening match at SummerSlam. Cena said it was an honor to win the U.S. Title and help newer guys like AJ Styles and Kevin Owens get to the main roster, and Reigns took the U.S. Title as a demotion.

“I blame you,” he told Reigns. “I’m still here because you can’t do your job. You should be ashamed that I’m a part-timer because I can do this part-time better than you can ever do it full time.”

Although Cena eventually lost the No Mercy match, this promo remained one of the best of his WWE career. Watch the iconic promo below –
