Renowned promoter Lou DiBella has recently encountered a ridiculous question on the internet that sought to draw a comparison between Roberto Duran and Gervonta Davis. While the question wondered how Duran and Davis in their prime would do against each other inside the boxing ring, DiBella located ridiculousness in a “rhetorical question” such as this. According to DiBella, ‘Tank’ should have the liberty to prove that he is the best of his time in boxing. In addition, such a question for DiBella offered little in terms of practical knowledge of boxing. A Twitter account by the name ‘MIGHTYMax’ asked the following: “Roberto Duran Vs. Gervonta Davis Prime V. Prime: Who Wins and How?” DiBella felt such enquires were not worth pursuing.

In a stern reply, DiBella asked, “Do you have any idea how ridiculous this is? Let Tank prove that he’s the best of his time in #boxing before we ask rhetorical questions about how he’d do vs the greatest lightweight OF ALL TIME.” To be precise, the boxing promoter felt such questions were modeled with the aim to waste time in the sport of boxing. Therefore, DiBella added the following: “We are getting so little of the best vs. best today that we waste time with this!”

Lou DiBella condemns ‘dream match-ups’ after Roberto Duran vs. Gervonta Davis comparison post

According to DiBella, it is plain disrespectful to compare a current fighter with a “decent resume” against the likes of Ray Leonard, Lennox Lewis, Duran, and Ali. DiBella fails to understand this trend and thinks it is completely “silly”. In a follow-up tweet, DiBella added, “There’s a new trend with these “dream match-ups” and it is damn silly!”

By the time Roberto Duran retired, as per BoxRec, he had over 100 fights in professional boxing. Moreover, an orthodox fighter unlike Davis, Duran retired with a professional record containing 16 losses and 103 wins inside the ring. Davis, who belongs to a different era of boxing, has so far had only 28 fights in the pro ring. Recently, even Oscar De La Hoya warned Davis about fighting Ryan Garcia in the ring.
