“Tennis Is the Perfect COVID Sport”- USTA CEO Optimistic About 2020 US Open

Although there are dark clouds over the US Open, its organizers are feeling very confident. The USTA is still optimistic about holding the tournament despite some top players being unsure about it.
Assessing by the words of USTA CEO Mike Dowse, the US Open will surely happen. He made some interesting comments recently about the resumption of tennis and certain protocols in place for the Grand Slam.

“US Open has a green light in all the three important principles” – Mike Dowse
Speaking to Ivan Boran, Dowse says there are three fundamental principles in place for the tournament, and US Open has followed and adhered to the principles.
“Those three principles are: can we pull it off in a healthy, safe way for everyone?. If we can do that, then we go to two: is it good for tennis? Is it in the best interest of tennis?. And three does it financially make sense. And as of today all three of those are still true. We have the green light on all three. We’ve worked closely with the city of New York, the state of New York to make sure our health protocols are proper.”

Dowse has also highlighted how tennis has been the perfect sport to come out of the pandemic. He says the sales of pre-strung racquets and tennis balls have increased. So it seems that people are gearing up to get back playing and so tennis should begin.

“We’ve heard that sales of pre-strung tennis racquets and tennis balls have doubled since the end of March. And we know people buying racquets and balls, they are new players and that’s exciting. If you drive by public courts right now, they’re full. Tennis is the perfect COVID sport.”
With the pandemic still at large in the US, players like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Simona Halep are hesitant to travel to the US. Moreover, the calendar is so cramped up that the safest bet for players might be to skip the US Open. Let’s see if players are as confident as Mike Dowse.
