Former American tennis star, John McEnroe, was the most flamboyant tennis player of his time. While he was an absolute champion, his on-court antics always landed him in trouble. Over the years, the legend has transitioned and has mellowed down as a person. However, the past is something that can never be changed and remains alive for a long time.

We recall one such instance when the eight-time Grand Slam champion, was not happy with the All England Club. He didn’t get the honor a Wimbledon Champion is supposed to get. Let’s have a look at what happened back in 1981.
When All England Club refused to give John McEnroe an honorary membership
Back in 1981, Swedish tennis great, Bjorn Borg, was in rampant form. He was on a 41-match winning streak. He was almost unbeatable on the grass court. The Swedish tennis great had won the last five Wimbledon titles.
In 1981, Borg made it to the finals of Wimbledon yet again. This time he was up against McEnroe. Notably, Borg had defeated McEnroe in the Wimbledon final the previous year as well. However, the American had different plans this time, and he defeated Borg in four sets. After winning his first Wimbledon title, McEnroe was in line to get honorary membership of the All England Club. However, the club refused it because of his on-court behavior.
Here’s what McEnroe said about the incident. “I wanted to spend the evening with my family and friends and the people who had supported me, not a bunch of stiffs who are 70, 80 years old, telling you that you’re acting like a j*rk.”
McEnroe carried an unapologetic attitude and owned to his acts. However, the McEnroe we know now is far different from the tennis player he the legend was.
