But the journey hasn’t started as smoothly as he would have wanted, as a familiar disgruntled Serb showed up to the court.

The Serbinator clinched his victory over the Dane with a 7-6(4), 6(1)-7, 6-3 scoreline. However, a moment of frustration during the third set saw him receive a code of violation. Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune engaged in a nail-biting encounter to kick-start their campaign in Turin on Sunday, with the latter looking to avenge his loss in Paris-Bercy. This was Rune’s maiden appearance at the season-ending tournament and he didn’t disappoint his fans at all on Sunday. Rune went on to hit 19 winners in the grueling 72-minute encounter in the first set. The second set witnessed even longer rallies amid lightning-fast conditions at Pala Alpitour. But unlike in the first set, the Danish got the upper hand in tiebreakers and forced the match to a deciding set. 

Novak Djokovic is known for his comebacks out of nowhere. His composure during the intense moments of the matches has been the epitome of his success. But fans got to witness the other side of the Djoker as he let loose his anger after letting an early break lead slip in the third set. Breaking two of his rackets during the match, the Serbinator left a small pile of destruction behind the seat to receive a code violation.
