Injury Woes Continue for Stan Wawrinka, Puts Wimbledon Championship 2021 Participation in Question

Tennis is one of the most brutal sports when it comes to injuries. No question, the physically demanding game has a reputation for cut-shorting many flourishing careers. One of those unfortunate ones is the three-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland, Stan Wawrinka.
Notably, the Swiss star has not played on the ATP Tour since his first-round loss at Qatar Open 2021 early in March. His absence is because of a left foot surgery, which also caused his withdrawal from the French Open 2021. It is the first time after 16 years that Stan did not play at Roland-Garros.
Many fans hoped that he would return for the grass season, starting with the Queen’s Club Championships. But, the tournament has now announced his withdrawal, citing foot surgery as the reason. This year, the tournament’s title sponsor is the online car-selling website cinch.

Scheduled a week ago from Wimbledon Championships 2021, the cinch Championships would have given Stan enough match time. However, the pull-out has raised some serious questions regarding his Wimbledon participation, too.

Nick Kyrgios replaces Stan Wawrinka in the cinch Championships main draw
The Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios was the first alternative and has replaced Stan Wawrinka in Queen’s Club players’ field. He will also play the preceding tournament, the Mallorcan Championships, for the first time.
Similar to Wawrinka, Kyrgios, too, had missed the entire clay-court swing. However, his reasons for not playing are more personal than physical limitations.

What does this withdrawal mean for Wawrinka’s Wimbledon campaign?
Before the 2021 season began, Wawrinka showed great spirit to give his best before he retired. At present, he has a 3-3 win-loss record on the ATP Tour.
Therefore, to find his best game again, the 36-year-old Swiss star would need some matches under his belt. Since he withdrew from a crucial lead-up tournament, Stan’s Wimbledon campaign is a big question mark.
