Daniil Medvedev is playing non-stop tennis over the past few seasons. Understandably so, World Number 2 is at the prime of his career. The biggest win of his career came last season when he defeated Novak Djokovic to win the US Open title.

Further, he had a resounding start to this season. The 26-year-old finished as the runner-up at the Australian Open, losing to Rafael Nadal in the summit clash. However, Medvedev has endured a difficult time on the tour thereafter.

While Medvedev has enjoyed a rich vein of success in other North American tournaments like the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and at Rogers Cup in Canada, he has struggled to perform well at the ‘Sunshine Double’.? He suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Gael Monfils at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Further, his campaign in Miami came to a disappointing end as he lost to Hubert Hurkacz, who is the defending champion at the Miami Open.

Medvedev, who had a short stint at the No.1 spot in the rankings after his run in Acapulco, suffered from cramps during his quarterfinal loss in Miami. After the match, he opened up about how he dealt with the difficult situation.

Daniil Medvedev wasn’t 100% fit during his match against Hubert Hubert Hurkacz at Miami Open 2022
During the post-match press conference, an interviewer asked Medvedev about the details of the treatment to overcome his cramps. He said, “I was drinking a lot. But, yeah, I mean, there was a physio and the doctor. Again, they are not magicians, nothing they can do. So they just said, Drink.”

Further, Medvedev added, “Doctor gave me some more electrolytes and pills. Yeah, I took it, drank a lot, went shower, and they just went away a little bit. I think, yeah, it was good advice to stand up, because I was like sitting down, really tired, and then suddenly every muscle just went cramp, cramp, cramp, cramp. I was like a fish on the sofa.”

Medvedev is relieved his injury isn’t too serious
With the clay-court season right around the corner, this injury might have put a huge blow to his chances of reclaiming the Number 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic. However, the 26-year-old admitted that it wasn’t too serious. Elaborating on it, he said, “Yeah, as I say, you know, it’s nothing serious. In the evening you are going to feel better already and gonna be even a little bit like maybe I could have pushed myself more or something, but yeah, not really. I always try to push myself to the limits either on practice or on the match.”
