David Goffin has had an average season according to his standards. For a player who has beaten Nadal and Federer in the same event, to beating Novak Djokovic. He has failed to even make it to a final of any event this year. Things got even uglier when he tested positive for Covid-19 recently in October.

Before coming into the Rolex Paris Masters, Goffin made an opening-round exit at Roland Garros this year. Having played his first match in the 2nd round yesterday, he did look rusty. The Belgian went down to the Slovakian born Norbert Gombos 4-6 6-7 (6). Unfortunately, David won’t be making it to the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals. During the course of the match, Goffin blew off three set points in the second set of their match. It was a difficult task to hang in there after committing 46 unforced errors.

The 29-year-old did admit after the game that he was struggling to find his foot into the game after testing positive for the virus in October. He said, “I didn’t expect anything when I came here. It wasn’t good in Antwerp. I was still breathing heavily there. Here I just wanted to see where my level is at”.  He went on to add that his level of tennis was ‘very bad’ and that he had wanted to play in Paris this year.
