Having known the struggles involved in achieving legendary status in the field, McEnroe once acknowledged the work of another legend in a different field. It was none other than the English songwriter and actor, David Bowie.
John McEnroe and Bowie’s story
Though Bowie admires the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s career, he might not be so sure about his guitar skills. As this incident dictated by McEnroe hints at it. He said, “I was in a hotel in London. I would say it was 1981 or two, somewhere around there. It was around the time that I had sort of reengaged and started trying to play the guitar. It was a fairly straight ahead, simple song, Suffragette City.”

Thereafter he added, “So I’m in my hotel room, I’m butchering “Suffragette City” and all of the sudden there’s a knock on the door and it’s David Bowie. He goes, Hey man, I heard you were staying in the same hotel. Would you like to come up in have a drink in my room? I go, Hell yeah. Absolutely. And then he goes, Don’t bring the guitar.”
David Bowie was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Starman is one of his most popular singles and his albums like Low gave a different direction to the flow of the industry. Also, he starred in movies such as The Man Who Fell To Earth, Station to Station, and The Prestige.
