The 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, has recently announced his retirement from professional tennis. In a social media post, he announced that the Laver Cup 2022 will be the final tournament of his career.

Roger Federer had a tearful moment at the 2009 Australian Open

In the 2009 Australian Open, Federer played a grueling final against his great rival, Rafael Nadal. After playing for almost 4 hours and 23 minutes, Federer lost the final 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2. During the trophy presentation, the Swiss Maestro could not hold back his tears, as he was struggling to get some words out as well.

Notably, Federer was on the verge of equaling Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam titles and had the chance to avenge his 2008 Wimbledon final defeat to Nadal. After the match, he praised the Spaniard and showed great sportsmanship despite losing the match. Moreover, Nadal also hugged him and hailed his opponent for a tremendous fight.

Federer’s first and only French Open title in 2009

In 2009, Federer completed his career Grand Slam by winning his first and only French Open title after beating Robin Soderling in the final. Notably, this was the only trophy Federer did not get his hands on after dominating for years.

In the fourth round, Soderling did the unthinkable by beating the ‘King of Clay’ Nadal to pave the path for Federer to complete his career Grand Slam. After the match, Federer became emotional and called it ‘his greatest victory’.

Ending Novak Djokovic’s record-breaking streak in the 2011 French Open

In 2011, Novak Djokovic looked invincible as he was on a record-breaking 41-0 winning streak. During the French Open semis, he faced off against Federer and many pundits picked Djokovic as the favorite; the Serb hadn’t lost a single set in that tournament.

However, Federer proved everyone wrong, as he showed tremendous class to beat Djokovic in four sets to reach the final. Although he lost the final against Nadal, his win against Djokovic remained one of his greatest victories at Roland Garros.

Winning the Australian Open in 2017 after recovering from a long-term injury

Before the 2017 Australian Open, Federer had not won a Major in five years. Thus, many doubted whether he would ever win a Grand Slam again. Moreover, before the start of the 2017 season, Federer went through a knee surgery, which forced him out for most of the 2016 season.

However, Federer once again overcame such difficulties to win his 18th Grand Slam title after beating Nadal in the final. After the match, he became emotional as he was holding his 5th Australian Open trophy.

Notably, in the same year, he won the Wimbledon title as well. And in the next year, he won the Australian Open again, his last Grand Slam title.

Ending Pete Sampras’ run at Wimbledon in 2001

In 2001, a 19-year-old Federer did not win the Wimbledon title, but he did the unthinkable by beating Pete Sampras in the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament. Notably, Sampras was vying for his fifth straight Wimbledon title as he was 31-0 at the Championships.

In the fourth round, Federer shocked him in five sets, as the Swiss player won it 7-6,5-7,6-4,6-7,7-5. Many felt it was the changing of guard in tennis as Federer soon became a Wimbledon Champion in 2003. After winning it in 2003, he won the trophy for the next five years.
