Jannik Sinner of Italy was a revelation last year at Wimbledon. Actually, even before that, everyone knew what he was capable of achieving and his great dexterity with the tennis racquet. He knocked out Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16 last year and almost sealed Novak Djokovic’s fate in the quarter-finals stretching him to five sets. What was particularly heartbreaking was that he blew away and squandered a two-set advantage and eventually Djokovic became unstoppable.

The 21-year-old prodigy was a disappointment in the 2023 French Open as he crashed out in the second round itself. A lot was expected of him, but he couldn’t deliver on that. He cited that he put too much pressure on himself and that was one of the reasons for his shock loss. However, out of nowhere, Sinner has said something which many would read as an overconfident statement considering his miserable form coming into tennis’ grandest stage. Let’s find out more.

Can Jannik Sinner really outperform Novak Djokovic?

No doubt, Sinner can beat Djokovic, but it is Djokovic’s far superior mental fortitude that separates him from others in a big way. As mentioned, at last year’s Wimbledon, Sinner performed exceedingly well against Djokovic but lost the game mentally and Djokovic preyed on him quickly and won the match pretty convincingly in the end.

So while no one can criticize Sinner for being confident ahead of the tournament, one must also realistically consider certain things before coming to conclusions. Yes, Sinner can beat Djokovic, but it is going to be a Himalayan task for sure. Sinner says: “I can’t deny it; I believe I showed last year that I am ready. I have shown that if I find my game, I can perform very well on grass. I don’t think there are many players capable of beating him, but I include myself among them.”

Sinner also admitted that he admires the physical conditioning of Novak Djokovic who keeps himself fit all through the tour. He says that is a huge source of inspiration for young players like him and that he can learn a lot. He credited Djokovic claiming that the Serb can play for five hours every day. And it really is true. Being 36 and playing at this high level is definitely inspiring.

Winning so many Slams and other important tournaments is incredible. You have to be physically ready because he can play for five hours a day.
