‘Was That Really Worth $35,000?’ – Serena Williams’ Coach Patrick Mouratoglou Questions the Rationale Behind Nick Kyrgios’ Massive Miami Open Fine

The sunshine doubles have undoubtedly become two of the most expensive tournaments for Nick Kyrgios. At the Indian Wells, the Australian incurred a $25,000 fine for his post-match outburst during his quarterfinal match against Nadal.
Not even a month complete, Kyrgios has again been fined, this time at the Miami Open. During his fourth-round match against Jannik Sinner, Kyrgios indulged in a heated argument with the chair umpire, followed by many more things.

As per the official statement, Kyrgios this time has been fined $35,000. Segregating the fine, $20,000 has been imposed for verbal abuse, $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct, and $5,000 for an audible obscenity. Learning about the fines, the tennis world has had many different opinions on the matter. On one hand, a large number of tennis fans believe that the fines imposed are correct. Whereas, On the other hand, there is again a huge portion of the tennis community who is condemning the fines.

Patrick Mouratoglou on Kyrgios getting fined

Learning about the fines, like the whole tennis community, star coach Patrick Mouratoglou also gave his opinion on the matter. Patrick took to his Twitter, uploading a tweet. In his tweet, he reshared another tweet showing what happened between Kyrgios and the umpire. Sharing the tweet, the founder of the Mouratoglou Academy refrained from giving his personal opinions on the matter. Instead, he opted to leave the tweet as an open-ended question. He wrote, “What do you think of this? Was that really worth $35,000?”

Mouratoglou is one of the most celebrated coaches in tennis. The 51-year-old French has been the coach of the legendary player Serena Williams since 2012. Working together, Patrick has helped Serena win 10 of her 23 Grand Slams titles.

After suffering a quarterfinal loss in Indian Wells, Kyrgios next entered the Miami Open as the wildcard. Beating Adrian Mannarino in the first round, he further went on to beat the 5th seeded Andrey Rublev in the second round. Taking his win forward, he next beat Fabio Fognini in the third round, before finally getting against Jannik Sinner.

Even though Kyrgios suffered a fourth-round exit in the singles draw, that wasn’t the case in the doubles draw. Pairing up with his Australian open partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, the two entered the draw as a wildcard. In the first round, they beat the pair of Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.

They got a slight relief in the second round as they received a walkover against Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev. Moving ahead strong, in the quarterfinals, the two beat the pair of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. However, the pair of Hubert Hurkacz and John Isner outplayed them in the semifinals.
