Wounded by US Open Heartbreak, Ambitious Carlos Alcaraz Sets Daunting 2023 Goals as He Looks to Dethrone Novak Djokovic

There are many records a tennis player can go after. Masters titles, grand slams, overall titles, number of aces, and much more. But there is an achievement that all players want in their careers. It is to be number 1 in the rankings chart, towering over all the other players on tour. Carlos Alcaraz is no different and revealed his desire when it comes to the ranking in a recent interview. 

He is not alone in wanting to be number 1 over other accomplishments. His main rival, Novak Djokovic, also loves being at the top. Despite winning 24 grand slams, the Serbian star still loves being on the top, like Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz reveals his main goal in a candid interview

The young Spaniard has attained many goals in the short span of his career. He has won two grand slams and is already at number 16 for weeks at number 1. But since the US Open, he has not been able to come back to number 1. Alcaraz recently revealed his main goal in the sport. As per his interview in the Beijing Press, the young Spaniard is itching to return to the highest level as he loves the position now.  

For me, the #1 ranking is one of the main goals for me. In these great tournaments, I’m looking to do great to be able to be close or recover that number.” Unable to win the US Open as the defending champion, he is hoping to gain points in the China Open in order to gain some traction and battle with Djokovic for the number 1 spot again.

The Spanish wonderboy has experienced the top and has become addicted to the position. Now, he will fight with everything he has to attain the position once again. While many would believe winning grand slams is a bigger accomplishment, even Djokovic shares the same goal as Alcaraz and believes being number 1 is a bigger deal.

Novak Djokovic shares his biggest accomplishment 

Before he had won the US Open, Djokovic amassed an impressive 23 grand slams, creating a record in men’s tennis. The Serbinator was on cloud nine after the achievement, but for him, his greatest accomplishment has been weeks at number 1. He stated in an interview that a player can win three grand slams and still have the possibility of not landing at number 1.

The two current greats of the sport have stated that being number 1 is their greatest dream. Being on the top for so long has made them addicted to the position, and now they will fight with everything they have to make sure one of them stays at the top of the sport.
