The debate between Stanislas Wawrinka and Gerard Pique does not seem to stop anytime soon. The Swiss international, who is currently playing in the Davis Cup in Manchester had to play his match against Team France in an almost empty stadium. He could not do anything but express his frustration on Twitter while tagging Spanish soccer legend Gerard Pique and taking a dig at him.

Pique came up with a hefty investment and changed the format of the Davis Cup. After shots were fired from the Swiss player’s end, Pique could not hold back his words and replied to Wawrinka in his own style.

However, the debate soon heated up with both parties refusing to give up while giving their own points.

Stanislas Wawrinka and Gerard Pique in a war of words over Davis Cup

The ongoing war of words between Stanislas Wawrinka and Gerard Pique shows no signs of slowing down, as both sports personalities traded blows on social media. The heated exchange began when Wawrinka shared a video of an empty crowd at the Davis Cup final, subtly poking fun at Pique’s involvement.

Pique wasted no time in responding, highlighting the success of the previous year’s Davis Cup, which saw an impressive 113 thousand fans attending the group stage matches. He also emphasized that he was no longer in charge of organizing the event.

Wawrinka, undeterred, shot back with humor, stating that the empty crowd at least brought a smile to his face after a tough day on the court. However, he continued to question the Davis Cup’s trajectory, raising doubts about why the 25-year deal was abruptly terminated after just five years.

Pique, not one to back down, cryptically remarked that the reasons behind the deal’s termination were yet to be fully revealed, leaving it to the judgment of the courts. The exchange remains a compelling clash of ideas in the world of sports, with both sides remaining resolute in their beliefs.

Interestingly, Gerard Pique is the main face of the Kosmos Group which, with its $3 billion investment changed the format of the Davis Cup. The home and away ties were no longer in existence at the cup to make it a world cup style event. However, it has received major backlash from both fans and tennis greats, like the Swiss Maestro.

When Roger Federer took a dig at Gerard Pique

Back in 2018, Roger Federer also did not hold back and was quick to fire shots at the former Barcelona FC star. He suggested that a professional soccer star entering the tennis scene does not make any sense as he would have limited knowledge about the game.

Federer also suggested that the Davis Cup should not be renamed the Pique Cup after his involvement in the sport. Interestingly, Pique signed a 25-year deal with the ITF, however, just 5 years into the deal, Pique stepped back and canceled the deal.

“I haven’t spoken to Gerard Pique yet, but I admit that it’s a bit odd to see a footballer arrive and meddle in the tennis business. Be careful: the Davis Cup should not become the Piqué Cup,” said Federer when asked about Pique.

Thus, the war of words between tennis stars and the soccer legend does not seem to stop anytime soon. With shots being fired equally at both ends, it will be interesting to see if other renowned names in the ATP and WTA Tour follow suit.
